  • Setup: Headphones & Phone

  • Are headphones required?

Yes, headphones are necessary for completing the hearing test. For the most accurate results, we recommend using the supported headphones. You may also use other Bluetooth or wired headphones (with certain exceptions, such as ones with non-compatible adapters), but please note that the accuracy of the results may be affected.

  • What are ‘supported headphones’?

Supported headphones are models that we have tested and accounted for their tuning differences to ensure consistent and accurate test results.

  • Which headphones are supported?

The Mimi App currently supports the following headphones: Apple AirPods (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations), Apple AirPods Max, Apple AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generations), Apple EarPods, Beats Fit Pro, Powerbeats Pro, Bose QuietComfort 45, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, JBL Vibe Buds, JBL Vibe Beam, Nothing Ear, Nothing Ear 2, Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Buds FE, Skullcandy Grind Fuel, Skullcandy Sesh ANC Active, Sony WF-1000XM5, and Sony WH-1000XM4.

  • How do I identify the model of my headphones?

For Apple headphones, when using an iPhone or iPad, you can find your model number in the Settings app under Bluetooth or in the [your AirPods] section. Once you have the model number, you can use it to identify your AirPods generation on Apple’s website. For other headphones, refer to the packaging and manual provided by the manufacturer to locate your model number and additional information.

  • My headphones are not listed as supported. Can I still perform the hearing test?

Yes, but results may be less accurate. We’re continuously working to add more supported headphones to the list.

  • Test Process & Accuracy

  • Which frequencies are tested?

The Mimi Hearing Test measures standard octave frequencies: 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, and 8000 Hz. These frequencies cover the range most important for understanding speech and everyday sounds.

  • Are my results still accurate if I don't press the button immediately after hearing the beep?

Yes, your results will still be accurate. Our system accounts for the slight delays in interacting with your mobile device.

  • I can’t find a quiet environment. Can I still perform the hearing test?

The test is designed to work best in a quiet setting. If conducted in a noisy environment, the results may be inaccurate. For reliable results, we recommend waiting until you're in a quiet space before starting the test.

  • I’m testing one ear but hear a static sound in the other ear. Is this normal?

This is known as a contralateral masker and is a normal part of hearing tests. It is used when assessing hearing to prevent "cross talk," where the non-test ear detects sound intended for the test ear. The contralateral masking noise is introduced in the opposite ear when the pure tone reaches a specific volume level to ensure accurate results.

  • I have tinnitus and can’t hear certain frequencies. Can I still complete the test?

Yes, you can complete the test. However, tinnitus may mask the test signal in specific frequency ranges, affecting results in those areas. The rest of the test should remain unaffected.

  • Test Results

  • What hearing test results will I receive after taking the test?

After taking the hearing test you will receive personalized hearing test results.

Hearing Loss Grade: You will receive one of 5 hearing loss grades defined by your better performing ear: No hearing loss / Slight hearing loss / Mild hearing loss / Moderate hearing loss / Severe hearing loss.

Hearing Number: Your Hearing Number is a metric that can help you better understand your hearing and how it changes over time.

Hearing Capacity: The Hearing Capacity, ranging from 0 to 100%, indicates hearing ability for each ear.

Hearing Sensitivity (only available in certain regions): The graph represents how well you hear different frequencies.

  • Why can I no longer see my audiogram in the hearing test results?

Due to regulatory changes associated with updates to our CE certification, the audiogram feature is no longer available in certain regions. To ensure you still have access to your hearing graphs, including historical data, we recommend connecting the Mimi Hearing Test to Apple Health. There, you can conveniently visualize and export your hearing test results.

  • I'm hard of hearing in one ear, why is my hearing grade still good?

The Hearing Grade is calculated based on your better-performing ear. This is a standardized approach, as the better ear in daily life often compensates for the other one. You may want to check the guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) on this matter.

  • What is the Hearing Number, and why is it blank?

The Hearing Number for each ear is determined by averaging your hearing thresholds at four key frequencies: 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz. These frequencies are standard in audiology as they are critical for understanding speech perception. If we are unable to capture data for even one of these frequencies, we cannot calculate the Hearing Number, and it will be listed as unknown. This may occur due to technical limitations during the test.To help capture more complete data, please consider the following tips:

    - Make sure you are correctly interacting with the test: press and hold the button when you hear a sound, and release it when the sound stops.

    - Take the test in a completely silent environment and use the supported headphones.

    - Disable any Audio Effects and Accessibility features on both your phone and headphones, as these can interfere with the sound quality and test accuracy.

    - Additionally, if your hearing loss is significant, it is possible that our app may not be able to accurately detect thresholds.

If the results continue to be incomplete, we recommend visiting a hearing professional for a more comprehensive evaluation using advanced diagnostic equipment.

  • What can I do if the app says ‘We were unable to calculate your results’?

This can happen due to the technical limitations of the test. In some cases, there may not be anything you can do to change the outcome. However, it's also possible that more complete data could be captured by following the test instructions as closely as possible, including ensuring proper headphone placement and a quiet environment.

    Here are some tips:

Ensure you’re interacting with the test correctly by pressing and holding when you hear a sound, and releasing when it stops.

Take the test in a completely quiet environment, and use the recommended headphones.

Ensure your headphones are properly fitted and are clean.

Disable any Audio Effects and Accessibility settings on both your phone and headphones, as these can interfere with sound quality and accuracy.

    ‍

It’s possible that your hearing loss may have reached a point where the app cannot capture accurate data. In such cases, consult a hearing professional for more advanced diagnostic tools.
